Are There Any LGBTQ Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen? (2024)

Jujutsu Kaisen is among the most popular and best-selling manga of all time. It has been adapted into an anime series, which has become popular both in Japan and in the West. Written by Gege Akutami, the manga is still ongoing and is currently on one of its best and most thrilling arcs. But, regardless of the plot, the characters of Jujutsu Kaisen are another amazing aspect of this well-written series. They are odd, diverse, and quite intriguing, as well as well-written, but what interests us today is – are there any LGBTQ characters in the series? We are going to answer that for you.

As of this moment, there are two confirmed LGBTQ characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen series and they are a couple – Kinji Hakari and Kirara Hoshi. Hakari is a confirmed bisexual, as he has dated both girls and boys before, whereas Kirara is a boy who dresses like a girl and whose exact orientation is not known (he could be gay or bisexual). Some fans also speculate that Megumi could be pansexual, but this was not confirmed in the series.

Today’s article is going to be about Kinji Hakari and Kirara Hoshi, as well as their relationship. You’re going to find out their exact stories, as they are currently manga-only characters, which is why a lot of fans still don’t know much about them. There are going to be numerous spoilers in this article, so be careful how you approach it.

Who is Kinji Hakari in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Kinji Hakari is one of the characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series. He is a third-year student at Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College who was suspended during the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. Hakari is currently the head of the Underground Fight Club, along with his partner Kirara Hoshi, where he earns money thanks to the bets that take place there. Hakari is a young man with a stout body. He has short dark dreadlocks with the bottom of his head shaved. His eyes are small, his eyebrows not so bushy, and he has a mustache.

Currently, Hakari has light-colored hair, very wavy and abundant at the top, he has two vertical cuts on both eyebrows, and he has a piercing in his ear. In his brief appearance, it could be seen that he was wearing the Tokyo Metropolitan Magic Technical College uniform, which consists of an asymmetrical blue jacket with a high collar and two buttons on the left side, both engraved with the school’s logo. The uniform is completed with matching blue pants.

He was seen wearing a dark coat, underneath which is a light-colored shirt with a necklace, dark-colored pants, and dress shoes underneath. Hakari is a visionary and “passionate” person, he has declared that he loves the “passion” that can trigger some situations, he considers that the most direct way to exchange that “passion” is betting and considers these as life itself. People who are not interested in gambling are not part of his interest, and he expresses that they are people who “do not understand the nature of life” since they fear failure and ruin.

His dream is to one day conquer the “passion” of Japan through his underground fight club. According to Gege Akutami, Hakari is not that smart when it comes to studies, however, during his talk with Yuji Itadori, he received a call from Kirara Hoshi, and he immediately deduced that something was wrong and instantly managed to quickly fool Yuji Itadori.

Who is Kirara Hoshi in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Kirara Hoshi is one of the characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga series. He is a third-year student at the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College. Kirara currently assists Kinji Hakari in the Underground Fight Club. Kirara is a slender boy with dark straight hair that extends a little below his shoulders, he has a fringe with a light-dyed streak just above his right eye, he has thin eyebrows, his eyes are large, and both pupils have a star shape. In the area of his chin, he has four piercings, two distributed in each corner of his mouth, and another two in his chin.

Kirara is accessorized with a studded choker and various bracelets on both wrists, wears a black strappy crop top and another loose-fitting off-the-shoulder crop top, wears baggy low-rise jeans with a white belt, and wears closed-toe shoes dark with heel Kirara has shown to be a devoted person towards Kinji Hakari, she is fascinated and happy to see him passionate and always tries to do everything possible so that this passion is as protected as possible.

When he saw Panda next to Megumi Fushiguro, he instantly deduced that Yuji Itadori was also with them and his first action was to want to notify Kinji of his discovery in order to protect him. Also, Kirara doesn’t trust anyone related to the Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical College, and his position doesn’t seem to bend easily.

Hakari’s and Hoshi’s relationship explained

Now that we have actually explained who these two are, we can get to explaining the very nature of their relationship. Namely, Hakari and Kirara are actually the only two confirmed LGBTQ characters in the whole series. They are not only members of the LGBTQ community, but they are also a couple and their relationship seems to be a loving one, albeit a bit odd.

As for Kinji Hakari, we know that he is bisexual. He has confirmed that he has dated girls before, but seeing that he is now Kirara’s boyfriend, confirms that he is bisexual. No details have been provided about his past relationships, but it seems that he enjoys both genders equally and that it actually depends on the person his emotions are aimed at.

As for Kirara, we know that he is a boy (there is even a scene where he was shown in normal, everyday clothes without the extravagant feminine look and clothes) and that he also likes to dress like a girl, which he does, almost exclusively, in the manga. His personal life has not been explored that deeply so we don’t know his exact sexual orientation. He is in a relationship with Hakari, so he is definitely gay in the sense that he likes boys, but we don’t know whether he’s transgender, bisexual, or pansexual at the same time.

Gege Akutami never explored Kirara’s character that deeply, so we cannot confirm anything save for the fact that he is a member of the LGBTQ community, but his exact orientation is not known.

Also, Hakari and Kirara are a couple and they are, as we have said, the only confirmed LGBTQ characters in the whole series. Whether Akutami plans on introducing more LGBTQ characters or revealing information about some existing ones is not known at the moment, so this is what we have for you now, as far as the confirmed characters are concerned. But could there be more? Well, fans are always speculating and we are going to address some of these theories here.

One character that has often been described as being (possibly) LGBTQ is Megumi Fushiguro. Akutami did not dwell that deeply into his personal life either, but Megumi once explained that he preferred personality over anything else, saying that he could fall in love only with a person that has a great and incredible personality. At that moment, he did not specify any gender, so fans think that he could be, perhaps, pansexual, i.e., that he doesn’t care about gender per se and that he could be with anyone if they were the right person. This is a very difficult one to analyze, really, as there is absolutely no evidence to corroborate this theory.

People usually use the word “person” or some other neutral form when talking about emotions (“I could fall for someone like…”, for example), so it might just be fans reading too much into it, but knowing how specific the Japanese language is, it might also be a subtle hint by Akutami himself. Be that as it may, this is one possible theory and we’ll have to wait and see whether it’s true or not.

As for Satoru Gojō, another character that is often thought to be a member of the LGBTQ community, we’re not so certain. Gojō is definitely quite flamboyant and extravagant, but that doesn’t seem like an indication of anything specific; it’s just his quirky personality. He was close to a couple of male characters, but they were his friends and there was really nothing precise that hinted towards anything more than just close friendship (when we’re talking about Geto), so this really does seem like fans reading too much into it.

Also, it has been hinted that there is potential for a romance between Gojō and a female character, but we won’t be spoiling too much for you at this moment. But no, we don’t think that Gojō is an example of such a character, but Akutami might surprise us all in the end, so who knows?
