The 31 best resorts and all-inclusive vacations in Sofia (2024)

The Sofia Hotel Balkan is a luxurious 5-star hotel in the heart of the city, providing excellent accommodation options for visitors looking for a relaxing stay in Sofia. The hotel features stylish rooms and a variety of amenities that will make your stay enjoyable, including a restaurant, bar and spa.

The “Palace” is in its name, need I say more. To me the room decor is what blew my mind. The textured walls, the high tech light switches, heated bathroom floor, the skyline view or city view from your balcony are the things which sparked my interest. I love it here. The one thing that needs a little upkeep would be the breakfast bar. I normally attend breakfast right when it opens and I was shocked when I bit into my food and it was cold. The Palace is located in perfect location, right across from the ancient ruins, in the heart of the city. Go check the Palace out, you will not be disappointed.

Well, the location is perfect. Check in could be faster. Breakfast is decent. Gym room is very tiny. Surprises meet you when you come to the room. This is the first experience in my life to pay €160 per night for a room:- without TV- with window view to the wall of the next building at 1,5 m distance- not clean enough and even with used socks of the previous guest on the window behind the curtainSo an outstanding experience:))) But! The stuff was quite friendly and helpful 😊

Great hotel. The room were clean and nicely decorated. You can not beat the historical high sealing. We enjoy the modern touches for the lighting, curtain and housekeeper button in the room.We would have love to be able to not have that much heat in the room but understand the heating system is for the whole building.Service at the front desk was extremely nice. Friendly staff all over from front desk, house keeper, breakfast staff. Everyone was helpful.

This hotel looks stunning, and the rooms are beautiful. But there are issues with the finish. Taps not secured properly in the bathroom sink, leaking sink in the toilet.Slightly surly bar staff too.The hotel have a beautiful Kawai baby grand piano in the lobby, but it was out of tune when I visited which was a severe disappointment. It's such a gorgeous piano but was unplayable 😒The location is amazing, the views were great from my room.

We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed our time. Entering the hotel we were pleasantly welcomed by the staff at the door, who later took very good care of our luggage and kept smiling at us every time he sees us. The experience on reception was no different. A young boy with very good manners did the check in and luckily for us we got a free upgrade to an en-suite room. The room was nice and clean. We had a little balcony with a nice view of central Sofia. In general I chose this hotel for its location but I was extremely pleasantly surprised by the staff and their hospitality. And the rooms were quite decent to be honest. It’s definitely worth the price and I would stay there again.

Nice rooms, reasonable service and a solid breakfast. I would give this five stars but I cannot because despite the room being 30 degrees the hotel refused to turn on my air-conditioning. I was told “open the window” which is absolute madness. Because of this, I will not return to this hotel and have warned friends and colleagues that this is a poor reflection on Marriott and to avoid.

3.5 Stars.Basically this hotel is a great 4 Star Hotel. Problem is, it's not a 4 star hotel, it's a 5 star hotel. It seems more the 5 star rating is more for the grand marble entry and different eating options rather than quality. Our room was, on the surface, gorgeous. Looked very luxurious. However, as soon as you look a little closer, it's obvious the work is subpar. Our automatic curtain opener did not work, screens were not attached nicely in their fittings, the TV showed a very unclear picture, there was an exposed wire in the bathroom, etc. It was just...disappointing.However, it was still a nice room and the bed was comfortable enough. There was air-conditioning (100% required as the room collected heat like a kid collecting eggs on Easter Sunday) that was simple to use and a ample instructions were provided to operate the digital system. The price was very affordable. We did not partake in the breakfast buffet so I cannot rate that here.In summary, a good 4 star hotel, but aside from aesthetics, definitely not a 5 star hotel.

Very well located hotel, we expected a luxury stay at a 5 star hotel with years of good reputation.Pros:We were lucky to get one of the renovated rooms with a great view of the church. The design of the room was very nice. The facilities of the room were great.Great locationGrand entrance and architecturally magnificent building.Helpful and kind staff service. Our requests were addressed immediately.Cons:The building is undergoing renovation. The works are not hidden from the visitors and is not pleasant to see the mess of the construction floors. The breakfast was served cold every day.The room was not cleaned to a 5 star standard. Glasses and robes, toilet brush were found dirty and the bathroom had a lot of scale.Very noisy from the construction works happening outside the hotel.

BEWARE-Zero service at reception, rooms not cleaned at all or cleaned partially. This hotel is under substantial renovation! Plus outside as well. Many amenities are not functioning although it states they are on their website upon reservation. No spa or pool. DOES NOT WORTH A BUCK.

Yoni Elias — Google review

We stayed in the newly renovated rooms. There were some oddities with the electrics and the touch screen panels that made the lights a bit of guesswork at times. The room seemed clean but there a previous guests toiletries in the shower. Room was spacious, breakfast fairly varied and the staff all friendly. We had a room with a view of the church which was lovely.

Great location and stunning building which has kept its original beauty. Staff are friendly and polite. However, for the price we expected so much more. The breakfast selection looks great, but the execution - is significantly lacking - had much, much better breakfasts elsewhere in Sofia. So if you are looking only for location and don't mind the cost go for this place, it's comfortable. But go outside for breakfast. Also disappointed as when we booked it was advertised with the casino downstairs, however when we tried to go there we where informed it had moved location. We aren't really gamblers, but just fancied some fun on our last night in Sofia. We should have been notified of this before we arrived.I would probably only recommend this place to people travelling on business.

Pros: Firstly, the hotel is in a prime location - you can walk everywhere. The decor and the quality of the finishes are okay. The breakfasts were okay, everything was fresh, and there was enough variety that, even after staying in this hotel for 6 days, I didn't feel tired of it. The prices are good.Cons: I received a room on the 6th floor, door to door with the service room - from 6 in the morning there were laughs, banging with carts, no one cares that people are sleeping next door, the doors are paper-thin, and this is supposedly a 5-star hotel. I asked for a change, and got a gloomy room with a view of the patio. I asked 5 times to make sure it was not next to a service room - it wasn't and there hadn't been one, but for some reason, the staff made it a meeting spot for chats outside my door every day. I understand that cleaning happens in a hotel, but it can be done quieter or at different hours. In my opinion, the hotel deserves at most 4 stars.

One of the best hotels. Nice location. Very big. Great choices and activities.Clean rooms and helpful personnel.Tasteful and with many choices breakfast.I recommend it to all who come to Bulgaria. The prices are good for a 5 star hotel in the center of the city.

Very disappointed, this used to be the best hotel in Bulgaria, now very much faded. Room carpet very stained, walls marked and stained. Fantastic building deserves better. Can’t recommend this hotel. Not 5 star, maybe a good 3 star, no soap for the shower, had to fill a cup with shower gel and use that. Location is excellent. Staff also were no problem at all.

Place is alright. Though for five stars I would have expected more.- We were placed in room next to construction. One of suites were renovated or something and floor was covered on concrete right next to us.- co*cktail bar is just horrible. We have ordered whisky sour and black Russian. And well, this was the saddest whisky sour I ever saw.-They have some smart home system. Which is extremely confusing. Took us good 5 minutes to figure out how to switch on lights. And I have advanced mathematics degree.Other than that. All is very spacious. Location is central, and staff is very friendly.

Overall, good location I would say, but the quality of the rooms and the service was very very poor.Pros:- Location. Building is impressive. And that’s it.Cons:- Very bad service at the reception - they look at you like “how dare you ask me do my job?” - went to the reception earlier on to kindly ask them to refill the coffee pods and give us a small towel; NOTHING was done!!! 0 f&@ks given - not too welcoming around here I would say.- Extremely poor room service: no changed towels, taking towels out but not replacing them, bed was made but more like a joke, nothing cleaned, mini bar was not refilled, coffee pods not refilled.- Quality of the room vs the price paid: it worth it - I understand the hotel is in “renovation”, fair enough, but I don’t feel like they care if the guests have a good comfortable time.- Awful smell on the corridor.- Maximum a 2 star hotel in a 5 star building (well once the renovation is done). There’s also this strange puppet “playing the cello” on the 4th floor that is so so so kitch 🫤🥲🤣Photos:1 & 2 - bathroom; 3 - bed after room cleaning; 4 - coffee table after cleaning; Please, if you want to enjoy your stay in Sofia, do not book this hotel - there are other hotels also central and with a better price/quality match.

I wish I could offer nicer things about Sofia Balkan, but it was disappointing for my husband and myself. One advantage is the location. One is near to the centre, and viewing the historical sites was as simple as taking a stroll across the park. That was fantastic. The hotel's first impressions were that she was once a beauty, but that time had long gone, and despite her best efforts, she wasn’t up to par. I must add that most of the personnel might need some lessons in friendliness and warmth, and a grin or two would not go amiss. To be fair, a handful of them who did live up to hospitality norms were delightful. For me, our room was alright, but lacked warmth, on the other hand, the bathroom was fantastic.Breakfast was a disaster. Bread that looked like cardboard, a toaster that took 7 minutes to toast the bread and still wasn't done. Nothing else appealed to me except the fresh fruit. This might just be me, but as a global traveller, I recognise a nice breakfast when I see one.We are not planning on returning.Black Blaze

This is what 5 stars looks like, from staff to rooms, facilities & service. Stunning location. We had an amazing time! The buffet breakfast is also fantastic & has everything you can dream of. Our third time here in Sofia and we are more than happy to stay in the near future.

The room was nice, we got an "attic room", spacious bed area and bathroom, great toiletries. Hotel is walking distance to a large amount of attractions, also very close to pick up spots for tours when Hotel pickup is not included. I'm giving 4 stars because of a specific person from front desk/concierge, she gave bad advice for restaurants and was not informed about things in the Hotel, we forgot something in the room to which the night manager made it his purpose to find, he did, we went back next day on our way to the airport to find this person say it hadn't been found and that she knew nothing... item was returned to us. Great stay, hotel is much recommended, just had a bad experience with 1 person.

Very nice hotel in the center of Sofia, near to almost everything to see in the city.Rooms was good, service ok, amazing breakfast with a very rich buffet.Only thing to say, when they make rooms they do not change cups and refill the tea you used, also bathrobe was not replaced.

I love the newly renovated rooms!!! Beautiful bathroom, too. I had a problem with the fully automatic light switches though :). Location is good but view was not the best.

Α historic hotel, centrally located and overlooking an archaeological site, offers lots of facilities, a touch of luxury and a sense of charm. I visited for a conference; the premises were excellent and coffee and meal brakes well provided for.

Afroditi Kamara — Google review

I can't give more than one star since that's about the category of a hotel that would have rooms (I guess not all of them but still) without a bathroom/washroom door. What a joke. The hotel gym which is apparently being renovated, was therefore moved to a downstairs lobby/office and is about 60 percent functional was among the more "original" ones I've seen.

Booked in emergency this place for 6h sleep , thought i will pay more money and get comfort , but instead I've got housekeeping to woke me up after 5h sleep , they tried to come in to my room twice at 7am .. difficult to find main entrance, advertised that there is a parking, which is a lie. Overrated very good location though

Great historical hotel in the center of Sofia. Old money aesthetic rooms. Very helpful staff. Breakfast needs some improvement. Sadly the casino is being renovated so we could not visit.

I had a delightful 4-day stay at the Sofia Balkan Hotel. My accommodation in the Junior Suite was impeccable. Both the bar and restaurant were excellently managed, and the staff was courteous, providing valuable advice. The pricing for the Junior Suite was quite reasonable. Should I return to Sofia, I will undoubtedly choose to stay here again. Many thanks!

What a beautiful hotel. The location was idyllic - right in the centre of town and just at the end of the main pedestrian street. The building is historic, grand and majestic - and our room was lovely.Breakfast was incredible - so much variety, so many fresh fruits and hot items. It was a true decadent feast. The parking was a little difficult, there were only 5 spaces and we had to pay 21€, but at least it was right outside and we got a space.

Stayed here a couple of times because work dictates but it's just a very tired experience. The renovated rooms are better than the old but simply don't work. Can't turn off lights despite the fancy switches, imagine trying to sleep with all the lights on in your room because you just can't turn them off all night because in some stupid move the renovation decided to install smart panels that just do not work and no one really cares. Aircon doesn't work. Rooms half finished with stuff coming off the wall. Effort to renovate but just not seen through with a proper focus on how guests actually use their rooms. No storage in the rooms - I've never had to stack my clothes on the floor because there is literally no storage space. Room service is non existent, one night being told it wasn't serving tonight (weds) because someone clearly couldn't be bothered to deal with a request for water and having to walk to a convenience store for a bottle of water was especially poor. There isn't a restaurant/bar for food apart from breakfast which is also poor. Yes you can go down for a co*ke but if you want food after 11am it's mcdonald's you'll be walking to. Extremely disappointing for what is billed as a 5 star hotel in the centre of Sofia. Guest services are just non existent, it might as well be unstaffed.I will not stay here again. And for anyone reading the positive reviews - isn't it strange they all talk about the same positive points, like the breakfast being incredible, how clean it is, how amazing the service is and the renovated rooms being "luxurious"? Almost as if they've been incentivised to say something from a script specifically designed to speak to the stuff that is really unacceptable.

It seems I was only fooled by the number of 5 star reviews here. They simply tried to rip me off by giving me a regular room while I booked two suites. One of the rooms assigned to me had a separate living room while the other did not, and reception claims THE TWO ROOMS ARE THE SAME! What a comedy! They keep using the renovations as an excuse for not being able to give the booked room but they sell the rooms and not provide it anyway. If you can’t provide the room you don’t sell it. This is PURE SCAM.- Floors in the room were always dirty. Housekeeping only changes sheets and renews water bottles. In a 5 star hotel nobody needs to remind you that you need to vacuum the floors when you are cleaning a room.- I asked for a technician for the AC, reception said they are sending a technician, nobody came. Not ever.- Housekeeping never ever came and asked if the trash bin needs emptying or if we need the daily complimentary water. This is standard protocol in all 5 star hotels. You however don’t do it.- Shower and floor-heated bathroom are great though, but with lots of downsides of a hotel the goodness of a shower doesn’t do much for customer satisfaction.- I will never come to this hotel again. No matter what they offer or say. This was a one time mistake. Not happening again.

Cagdas Ozcan — Google review

The hotel is quite big and a classic building. The rooms are clean and big, the beds are confortable.Although for a 5 star hotel doesn't have too many facilities like spa or pool. The breakfast and t bar are available and the location is right in the center.

Marlene Cigarra — Google review

As someone who values comfort and cleanliness when traveling, my recent stay at the Sofia Balkan Palace hotel fell short of expectations. The room I was assigned was in dire need of renovation. The carpet was stained, the furniture was worn-out, and the overall ambiance felt outdated.Despite the promises of a luxurious experience, the reality was far from it. The bathroom was particularly disappointing, with outdated fixtures and a lingering smell of mildew. It was evident that the cleaning standards were lacking, as I found dust accumulating in corners and on surfaces.
