Major layoff in works at Shawano SHAWANO Sagging markets and foreign competition are being blamed for the layoff of an undetermined number of workers at the Marion Plywood Shawano plant. "We must take action to maintain our competitiveness in what has become a global market," President Peter T. Rogers said. Layoffs have been under way for the last several weeks, but a formal notice to employees of a mass layoff effective within 60 days has triggered concern that the Shawano plant will close its doors completely. That fear has been downplayed by the company management which has stated that rumors of an impending closing are without fact.

The letter, delivered to workers on Nov. 30 and signed by Roger Acra, human resources manager, said the mass layoff would begin on Jan. 29. "At this time it is expected that this layoff is temporary, but it is unknown how long it will last. You will be laid off at least six the letter said.

Acra said the letter does not mean the layoffs will occur, but complies with state requirements when a company is considering a major reduction in its labor force. In 1995, employment at the Shawano plant has more than doubled, going from under 50 workers in March to a recent high of 125. As many as 100 workers could be affected by the cutback. The reduction here is not expected to affect the main plant at Marion were about 300 are employed in the manufacture of veneer products. Suit filed in Banes' death From B-1 of proof.

It's a completely different kind of case," he said. Banes did not testify in his own defense at the criminal trial. "In a criminal case, the accused can remain silent," Healy said. Banes might be compelled to testify in the civil case but, Healy noted, "Of course, Mr. Banes could always take Fifth Amendment if he wanted to." The lawsuit has been assigned to Circuit Judge Robert Haase, who presided over the trial.

Banes is expected to be served with the complaint today. He will have 20 days to file a reply. 8 seeking 3 spots on Hortonville board HORTONVILLE Eight candidates will vie in the Feb. 6, 1996, primary election for six positions on the general election ballot on March 19. You're reading the newspaper judged to be Wisconsin's best Ramp deal is likely From B-1 I Repairs needed to bring the in compliance with state and ramp local building codes and place the ramp in a serviceable condition must be completed within five years of the transfer. The has the option of contracting with the city for routine maintenance, operation of the ramp, or both. I The ramp could revert to the city if it converted to a non-parking use; if the Y's tax-exempt status is threatened; or if the demonstrates it is operating the ramp "at a substantial loss." The city will i indemnify the for any existing environmental problems on the site.

The city will continue its existing level of police and fire protection for the site. The will charge non-Y members "a parking fee not less than the then-existing parking rates for public Central to the ultimate success of the pending transfer is the Y's ability to raise the money needed to refurbish the ramp. A study earlier this year showed that won't be easy, when an engineering firm estimated capital costs of $840,000 to get another 15 years of service from the ramp. Hauser said the is aware of the potential costs but has yet to come up with a funding strategy. "What specific action we'll take to refurbish it is really unknown at this time.

That would be a moot point unless we owned the ramp," he said. Another unknown, said Hauser, is how non-Y users of the ramp would be accommodated. "I expect we would talk to them. The Zuelke Building and Appleton Center come to mind, but there are others as well," he said. The council is expected to take up the ramp issue at its Dec.
